# Escape Room Team Building

ROUND ONE Australian escape room network business plan

Luke Nathan Hayes | 30 October 2026 | ROUND ONE research and calculation edition

## Executive summary

Distinctive escape rooms across Australia, connected by journeys worth taking, skills worth carrying forward and fresh reasons to return.

### The business

An Australia-wide network designing escape rooms, linking them into tourism routes and renewing the catalogue for repeat visits. Recorded play supports reflection on language and teamwork, followed by practice in another room or everyday setting. Recording is the standard design, with a clear opt-out.

[Aura of Intelligence](https://auraofintelligence.github.io/aura-genesis-geode-atlas/) connects participant-directed learning across visits. [p4a-xyz-cinema](https://github.com/auraofintelligence/p4a-xyz-cinema) connects local stories, civic scenarios and public explanations. Paid contractors supply creative, trade and specialist work; AI assists research and computation.

### Capacity and market prices

Competitor-price comparison · Editable assumptions

Puzzled prices groups of four to six at **$42 per person**, with a six-player room limit. Fox in a Box Brisbane advertises **10 rooms and 60 simultaneous players**. Escape This Perth CBD lists **14 rooms and 108 places**. These are individual venues. Escape This's **48 rooms and 336 places span five venues**, detailed in the market chapter.

The comparison below uses the $42 competitor price. Timing, attendance and trading inputs are assumptions: **8 offered sessions per room per day, 250 trading days, 50% sold and 5 paying players per sold session**. A 60-minute game plus 15-minute reset permits eight starts within a ten-hour room window. Briefing, reflection, staff and support space need separate capacity checks.

| Annual comparison | One room | Four rooms at one location | Four rooms at each of five locations |
|---|---:|---:|---:|
| Available team sessions | 2,000 | 8,000 | 40,000 |
| Sold team sessions | 1,000 | 4,000 | 20,000 |
| Paid visits | 5,000 | 20,000 | 100,000 |
| Ticket receipts including assumed GST | $210,000 | $840,000 | $4,200,000 |
| Ticket sales excluding assumed 10% GST | $190,909 | $763,636 | $3,818,182 |

These are ticket-turnover comparisons before costs. Each location is assumed to achieve the same attendance. At four or six players per sold session, the one-room receipt comparison becomes $168,000 or $252,000. The calculator changes price, group size, demand, timing, rooms and locations together.

### Commercial questions

The revenue opportunities are local admissions and workshops; room design and installation; network booking and support; and paid maintenance, renewal and rotation. Each needs its own cost and customer evidence.

The largest gaps are delivered premises and room costs, recording performance and review time, a feasible paid roster, local demand and repeat bookings. Supplier benchmarks appear in the economics chapter. The finance calculator withholds an operating result until its cost fields are completed.

ROUND ONE provides research and comparison inputs for Luke Nathan Hayes to review. Commercial choices remain open.

## Market and venue evidence

Venue capacity, published offers and the evidence needed for a local market case.

### Published customer prices

Checked 30 Oct 2026

| Operator and offer | Advertised price | Conditions relevant to comparison |
|---|---:|---|
| Puzzled public | $48 / $45 / $42 per person | Two / three / four to six players; maximum six per room. |
| Puzzled schools and community | $35 per person | Weekdays, minimum 20 participants. |
| Project Immersive Fission | $44 per person | 7 to 20 people across rooms, minimum three per room; one game each. |
| Fox in a Box corporate | $45 for one game; $80 for two | Minimum 13 participants. |
| Red Lock public | $55 / $47 / $45 / $42 / $40 per person | Two / three / four / five / six or more players. |
| Red Lock weekday marathon | $99 for three rooms; $33 for each extra | Minimum two people, same group and day; excludes Queensland school holidays. |

The summary uses Puzzled's four-to-six-player price without adding an assumed reflection premium. School and corporate tariffs have group conditions; multi-game offers are prices for several admissions, not single-room ticket yields.

### Physical room and venue area

Supplier checked 30 Oct 2026 · Fitout reference checked 29 Oct 2026

| Example | Published area | Measurement scope |
|---|---:|---|
| Indestroom Jungle and Magic School | 30 to 50 m² | Supplier game configurations. |
| Indestroom Pharaoh | 30 to 70 m² | Supplier game configuration. |
| Indestroom Vault32 | 40 to 80 m² | Supplier game configuration. |
| The Great Escape Melbourne fitout | 1,240 m² | Whole mixed venue including games, mini-golf, arcade, bar, kitchen and lounges. |

Supplier game areas exclude the separate support-space programme. The whole mixed venue cannot be divided by room count to infer a typical escape-room size.

### Demand and distribution

Checked 30 Oct 2026

TRA reports 112.5 million domestic overnight trips and $108.1 billion spending, plus 288.4 million day trips and $52.0 billion spending, in the year ending June 2026. Business-event visitors spent $17.2 billion in Australia during 2025. ABS records 4,160,918 school students in 9,673 schools in 2025. These describe the wider buyer context, not escape-room demand.

A local comparison needs competitor booking availability, reachable school and employer groups, visitor seasonality, transport, acquisition cost, repeat use and contribution by staffed opening block. Separate direct bookings, partner referrals and tourism distribution so commissions remain visible.

Sources: M01, M03, M04, M05, M06, M22

## Network and tourism

Linked destinations, repeat visits and settlement between participating businesses.

### Routes and repeat visits

A local room supplies a complete adventure; linked destinations offer different stories and opportunities to use the same skill. Possible products include a day route, regional weekend, longer passport journey, employer retreat and school series.

Brisbane, Redlands and Minjerribah provide one route concept. Melbourne, Beechworth and Albury provide another, with an existing example of games moving between operators. Routes require actual venue availability, travel time and independently priced partner services.

Sources: D07, M16, P05

### Passes referrals and partner sales

Compare separately booked referrals, a shared pass and a package sold by one contracting operator. The finance chapter contains the pass calculator.

**Network service revenue = pass receipts less venue allocations**, subject to the actual principal or agency arrangement. Venue ticket allocations and accommodation or meal sales do not become network service revenue. Measure linked trade through redeemed referrals and attributed bookings.

Sources: M05, M16, M22

### Room rotation

Mystery Rooms describes games placed with operators in Beechworth and Albury after consolidation at Fitzroy. Its vouchers exclude partner venues, so game movement does not itself establish shared ticket redemption.

Rotation costs include removal, condition checks, freight, receiving-site works, installation, commissioning, paid training and downtime. Compare these with a fresh build and with renewing the room in place.

Sources: M16

## Room design and deployment

Room formats, recorded play and paid installation supported by JIT learning.

### Formats and space

| Format | Space and cost to establish |
|---|---|
| Hosted rooms | Game areas plus the host's actual reception, reflection, amenities, storage and access provision. |
| Dedicated venue | Game modules and all support spaces, services, premises costs and staffing. |
| Partner installation or replacement | Measured module, interfaces with the existing venue and paid commissioning. |

**Whole venue area = game areas + reflection and teaching + reception + control + storage + amenities + quiet space + circulation.** Use measured usable areas. No national average room area is established by the supplier sample.

Sources: M11, M14

### Independent play and room cycles

Rooms run without hints. Necessary clues and instructions sit inside the game. Staff respond directly to safety, access and technical failures. Reflection follows play, including an unfinished challenge.

**Cycle minutes = play + reset + buffer.** The summary calculator checks offered starts against the available room window. Briefing and reflection can overlap play only where space and staffing permit. Simultaneous school cohorts need their own timetable.

### Recording and reflection

Recording is built into the experience, explained before play and offered with a clear opt-out. Opted-out people and their speech must be excluded from capture; removing only their wearable microphone may still leave them audible on other channels. The room and booking design must make that choice workable.

Captured speech and task events support post-play reflection. Test movement, overlapping voices, speaker attribution, timestamp accuracy, transfer time and facilitator review time. RØDE states up to four Wireless PRO kits, eight transmitters, in one place. That limit prevents treating a consumer single-room setup as a validated multi-room radio system.

Game controls must function independently of transcription. Recording, retention, personal Aura continuity, research and publication require separate controls.

Sources: R107, D03, D04, P01

### Reusable modules and JIT learning

Replaceable puzzles, service panels, labelled wiring, reset states and versioned parts lists support renewal and installation by another paid crew. Local stories can change around reusable mechanisms.

JIT lessons attach to a specific task: drawing, tools, method, demonstration, checks and acceptance. Record useful faults and corrections. Cost paid learning, filming, editing, mentoring and handover alongside installation. Lessons support skilled work; licensed and specialist work stays with the relevant qualified people.

### Labour and installation rates

Checked 30 Oct 2026 · Indicative provider rates

| Source | Published charge basis | GST basis |
|---|---|---|
| Dash general labour | $55 to $60 per hour | Excluding GST. |
| Dash carpentry | $75 to $85 per hour | Excluding GST. |
| Dash shopfitting and joinery | $65 to $85 per hour | Excluding GST. |
| Voltora business-hours attendance | $258.50 call-out and first hour; $148.50 each additional hour | Including GST; materials extra. |

**Work package = person-hours × charge rate + materials + attendance and travel charges.** Person-hours count each worker. Voltora's first hour already includes attendance; it must not be charged twice. Labour-hire charge rates already include the provider's employment costs.

Building works, acoustics, HVAC, controls, creative work, testing, training and commissioning need scoped quantities.

### Room packages and premises

Checked 30 Oct 2026

| Supplier room | Game area | Players | Advertised package AUD |
|---|---:|---:|---:|
| Jungle | 30 to 50 m² | 2 to 8 | $42,500 |
| Magic School | 30 to 50 m² | 2 to 6 | $89,900 |
| Pharaoh | 30 to 70 m² | 2 to 6 | $63,300 |
| Vault32 | 40 to 80 m² | 2 to 10 | $101,600 |

Indestroom converts standard EUR configurations into advertised AUD benchmarks. Freight, tax, site works, customisation and installation boundaries need a fixed scope. Its standard package includes a hint system, so compatibility with independent play requires design work rather than an assumption.

| Advertised property | Area | Asking rent | Annualised rent excluding GST and outgoings |
|---|---:|---|---:|
| Unit 7 / 338 Lytton Road, Morningside | 300 m² | $6,750 per month | $81,000; $270/m²/year |
| 4/65 Riverside Place, Morningside | 300 m² | $78,000 per year | $78,000; $260/m²/year |

These are different properties, not demonstrated escape-room premises. The Lytton listing describes a partial building with another upstairs tenant. Rent excludes outgoings and does not price access, approvals, fitout or make-good.

### Recording and AI usage costs

Checked 30 Oct 2026

| Published service benchmark | Unit price in USD |
|---|---:|
| gpt-transcribe recorded-file transcription | Estimated $0.0045 per submitted audio minute |
| gpt-live-transcribe live transcription | $0.017 per minute |
| gpt-6.1-sol Standard short-context uncached input | $2 per million tokens |
| Same model output | $10 per million tokens |

These are rate comparisons. **Submitted audio minutes = recorded sessions × recorded people per session × minutes submitted per person × submission count.** Full-length separate participant files each count; recording opt-outs reduce recorded headcount, while recorded teachers or facilitators add to it.

**Token cost = calls × (input tokens × input rate + billable output tokens × output rate) ÷ 1,000,000.** Add tools, storage, retries, hosting and paid human review. Standard short-context rates do not cover long-context, faster tiers or regional uplifts. The calculator keeps provider costs in USD until an AUD exchange rate and other invoice charges are supplied.

### Scope still unpriced

Premises and outgoings; building and acoustic design; approvals; partitions and finishes; ventilation; electrical/data materials; original room design and rights; landed kits; multi-room capture and monitoring; software implementation and storage; insurance and professional work; management and founder pay; full roster costs; consumables; utilities; distribution; freight and make-good; financing and specific risks.

Each package needs quantities, tax basis, inclusions, exclusions and payment terms. The [quote register](content/finance.json) retains these blanks. A supplier catalogue total cannot substitute for startup cash.

## Finance formulas and calculators

Turnover, paid work, contribution and settlement using editable inputs.

### Throughput and turnover formulas

**Available sessions = rooms × locations × starts per room/day × trading days − blocked room-days × starts per room/day.** Blocked room-days count one closed room for one trading day across the whole comparison; closures already excluded from trading days are not deducted twice.

**Sold sessions = available sessions × sold share.**

**Paid visits = sold sessions × average paying group size.**

**Ticket receipts = paid visits × price per person.**

**Sales excluding GST = taxable receipts ÷ (1 + GST rate).**

The [summary calculator](index.html#capacity-and-market-prices) scales one room through multiple locations. Mixed products use the sum of each product's sold sessions × group size × price, rather than applying one average ticket to incompatible group tiers.

### Wages and paid coverage

Checked 30 Oct 2026

| Adult casual benchmark | Ordinary hourly wage | Sunday hourly wage |
|---|---:|---:|
| Award Grade 4 | $36.81 | $51.54 |
| Award Grade 6 | $39.11 | $54.76 |

The Amusement, Events and Recreation Award supplies these comparison rates; coverage and classification depend on actual work. ATO's qualifying-earnings super rate is 12%. These are employee wages, separate from provider charge rates.

**Wages = sum of paid hours at each applicable rate.** Add super on eligible earnings, allowances and other employment costs. Paid hours include coverage, resets, recording preparation, review, reflection, workshops, breaks, training and management. Convert task minutes into feasible shifts before costing minimum engagements and overlapping demand.

Sources: R101, R125

### Contribution and break even

Comparison calculator · All cost fields use AUD excluding recoverable GST

**Net card cost per team = processor cash fee less eligible GST credit.** The Stripe domestic online-card benchmark is 1.65% of payment plus $0.30, including GST. Calculate and round fees per payment, then aggregate. Individual participant payments incur more fixed charges than one group payment.

**Contribution per sold team = sales excluding GST − variable delivery cost − card cost.**

**Operating balance before depreciation finance and income tax = sold teams × contribution − annual fixed costs − renewal provision.**

**Break-even sold share = (annual fixed costs + renewal provision) ÷ (available sessions × contribution per sold team).** If contribution is zero or negative, sales cannot cover fixed costs under those inputs. Above 100% is beyond the entered capacity. Leave unpriced costs blank so the calculator withholds the balance.

Sources: R103

### Pass settlement

**Venue allocations = passes × visits per pass × agreed amount per visit.**

**Service component = customer payment − venue allocations.**

**Service amount after processing = service component excluding GST − processor cost excluding eligible GST credit.**

The calculator prices a transaction using editable pass and allocation inputs. It rounds the processor's cash charge to cents. It also checks allocations against receipts. Redemptions, refunds, commissions, support and undelivered entitlements remain separate from the transaction calculation.

Sources: R103

### Revenue ownership and cash

Local admissions, deployment contracts and network fees are separate revenue streams. Venue allocations collected through a pass are tracked for settlement under the actual contract; related-entity consolidation eliminates internal transfers.

**Startup cash = capital and pre-opening payments + deposits + cash-flow trough + specific risk amounts − committed funding.** Sequence supplier milestones, payroll, tax, customer receipts, partner settlements and refunds. Unconfirmed grants and expressions of interest are not available cash.

Funding comparisons can include founder capital, host contributions, debt, member capital and negotiated investment. Define ownership, return and any local acquisition terms. C-Hour remains non-monetary and does not reduce the paid-work budget.

## Language teamwork and skill transfer

Recorded exchanges, participant interpretation and practice in a new setting.

### Context and repair

Recorded play gives a shared event to examine after the game. Review words alongside surrounding turns, task state and participant accounts. Computational analysis can identify candidate moments; people check attribution and meaning.

| Pattern | Example | Reflection focus |
|---|---|---|
| Blame | This is all your fault. | Events, information and responsibility. |
| Contempt | You are useless. | Effect of a judgement about the person. |
| Global label | You always ruin everything. | Specific event versus identity claim. |
| Exclusion | Nobody asked you. | Contribution attempted and response. |
| Pressure | Do it my way or you are out. | Choices, agreement and boundaries. |
| Self-judgement | I am stupid. | Difficulty treated as identity. |
| Premature hopelessness | Nothing will work. | Evidence and untried options. |
| Silencing certainty | Obviously I am right. | Alternative explanations considered. |
| Deflection | It was only a joke. | Intention, reception and repair. |

Anger, criticism, refusal and firm boundaries can be appropriate. Profanity alone is not a measure of harm. Culture, banter and the participants' interpretations matter. Quiet participation may include reading, making or thinking. Participants can correct the record.

Sources: D03, D04, D05

### Vocabulary and rehearsal

| Starting expression | Alternative to rehearse after play |
|---|---|
| You never listen. | I have not finished the instruction. Can I finish, then hear your idea? |
| I cannot do anything. | I am stuck here. I can explain what I tried. |
| That is stupid. | I see a timing problem. What if the first step takes longer? |
| Just do it. | Are you willing to take this part? What do you need? |
| Fine whatever. | I will support that choice and want to record one concern. |

The event supplies a reason to learn distinctions such as assumption, evidence, uncertainty, consent and repair. Reflection selects moments, checks accounts, rehearses alternatives and identifies a later application. Sensitive individual material needs a private setting.

Sources: D05, D06

### Progression and transfer

| Stage | Possible task focus | Application beyond the room |
|---|---|---|
| Primary years | Shared clues, construction and resources | Turn-taking, specific requests, fairness and repair. |
| Adolescence | Disputed information and peer situations | Evidence, pressure, boundaries and disagreement. |
| Early adulthood and work | Handover, travel, unfamiliar services and deadlines | Negotiation, checking requirements and accountability. |
| Families and generations | Shared plans and care preferences | Listening across differences and fair contribution. |
| Later life | Changed routines and community decisions | Directing assistance, adapting and mentoring. |

Version choice follows interests, readiness and access needs. Adjust text, pace and sensory load while retaining adult themes for adults. School designs can map to the Personal and Social capability continuum.

A participant chooses a skill to try in another room or real setting. A later task tests independent use; a positive debrief alone does not establish transfer. Personal Aura continuity retains the goals and examples the person chooses. Group clips require the permissions of the people included.

## Research computation and paid work

Evidence and computation supporting skilled human work and founder decisions.

### Research and computation

AI can compare cited market offers, calculate quantities and sensitivities, draft design alternatives, organise source records and prepare JIT material. Outputs retain their evidence and assumptions for human review. The business direction and decisions remain with Luke.

The software calculator prices defined work by usage. A model name identifies a rate benchmark, not an appointed agent or an operating role.

### Paid work

Cost preparation, travel where applicable, installation, paid learning, supervision, testing and handover. Design and specialist work need their own scope and provider rates. Skilled workers validate methods and acceptance; AI-generated hours remain estimates until checked against a quote or observed work.

JIT material should enable another paid crew to perform the task using the actual site and room version. Teaching, filming, editing and mentoring consume paid time.

Sources: D05, D06

## Renewal and rotation

Replacement costs, downtime and fresh content for repeat visits.

### Asset and content renewal

Track story versions, props and mechanisms, recording and control equipment, furniture and fixed services separately. Renew against condition, support, repeat demand and the cost of alternatives.

**Annual replacement provision = sum of each asset's replacement cost ÷ funding interval.** This is a cash-planning contribution, not depreciation or a prediction of failure. Enter repair, freight, installation and downtime separately.

### Downtime and room movement

**Lost contribution = displaced sessions × expected sold share × contribution per sold session.** Continuing fixed costs are not avoided by closing a room. Do not treat every blocked slot as a sold booking.

Compare new story paths, replacement puzzle modules, complete-theme renewal and movement to another venue. A rotation brief includes asset condition, rights, receiving layout, transport, works, commissioning, paid learning and downtime. Updated reset guides and JIT lessons travel with the relevant version.

## Local enterprise and partnerships

Local ownership options, tourism connections and cultural authority.

### Participation and ownership

Existing operators can install rooms or join distribution. Tourism businesses can host or supply linked experiences. Makers, designers and trades can supply paid work. Co-operatives can own assets and employ people. Compare the actual ownership, prices and obligations of each arrangement.

Mutual Futures offers a connection to succession and paid knowledge transfer. 500 Queens connects women-led enterprise and investment development. Councils and tourism bodies can contribute precinct information, premises evidence, event calendars and supplier connections.

Sources: P02, P03, M06

### Place learning and access

Local stories and cultural material require the relevant authority, payment, attribution and reuse terms. Personal Aura records remain controlled by their people. p4a-xyz-cinema can connect public explanations and scenarios about collective decisions without requiring political agreement.

School, youth, adaptive-support and teacher sources inform whole-life learning. Oceania co-operative and 82 Claytons proposals supply related place and intergenerational concepts. Funded access is costed as actual purchased admissions; voluntary C-Hour recognition remains separate.

## Research priorities

Evidence needed to develop a room location or network offer.

### Questions for the next round

| Question | Evidence to obtain |
|---|---|
| Which customers will book and return? | Responses to actual offers, local booking availability, acquisition costs and repeat use. |
| Which format fits? | Measured rooms and support space, access, recording opt-out design and peak staffing. |
| What does delivery cost? | Comparable scopes, dated prices, delivered new/used options, paid hours and payment terms. |
| Does the learning method work? | Independent play, recording quality, review time, participant accounts and transfer into a different task. |
| Does another location add value? | Its own demand and costs, usable JIT records, distinctive content and redeemed cross-venue bookings. |

An operating test would answer a defined subset of these questions. Its scope and duration follow the question and cost. No opening date or rollout schedule is established. The [research register](briefs/approval-register.md) records the resulting choices.
