The 2022 contest stories and 2023 workbook gave one long-running vision a detailed 2045 world. Move through the scenario without mistaking its projected milestones for recorded history.
The competition was an experiment, not the beginning
Luke Nathan Hayes had been working on his future plan since 2010. In 2022 he adapted part of it for the Future of Life Institute Worldbuilding Contest, which asked entrants to imagine a plausible, aspirational 2045 that avoided major climate, war and AI harms.
Luke did not make the finalists, but found the process fascinating. The two stories and later workbook became a time capsule of his thinking. The vision continued growing through projects built after the contest.

Cities and abundance
Olympic celebration, global voting, subterranean cities, extreme disruption, Mars settlement and responsible abundance reshape the imagined world.
A civilisation horizon
The scenario expands to lunar infrastructure, Mercury, Mars, generation ships and interstellar DNA Ark Seed Ships.
Future of Life Institute 2022 Worldbuilding Contest
The contest asked teams to imagine a plausible and aspirational world in 2045, using worldbuilding as a way to explore desirable futures. Luke's submission did not become a finalist. Its lasting value is the experiment itself and the way it gave an existing vision characters, places, dates and daily life.

How to read the timeline
Named UN decisions, funding percentages, population totals, life-expectancy figures, language figures, scientific events and corporate technologies are scenario content unless separately sourced. The point is not to pretend every date came true. The point is to see how the ideas connect, what has become a real public project and what remains a proposal, hypothesis or story horizon.
