Songs of Straddie · track 12

Heatwave

analysed

Two people who have circled each other all summer meet at a beach dance after dark, close enough to taste salt on skin, deciding without a word that tonight is the night. The whole island keeps their secret: the stars watch and won't tell. By dawn there is no tomorrow being planned, only the burnt-down fire and two people who never traded names.

Arc: It opens as a dare between two people testing who will break first ("let's see who'll be wise") and ends surrendered to the night with names abandoned ("there's no need for names").

Phrases for posters and merch

Verbatim lines that stand alone, for lyric posters, metal prints and t-shirts.

You're like a heatwave, burning through the night
The night's too hot to disguise
We're teasing the edge, it's almost too much
Under the island spell
The stars are watching, but they won't tell
No tomorrow, just tonight's flame
In this heatwave, there's no need for names
Our bodies talk, saying what we won't

Line by line

“You're like a heatwave, burning through the night”
Open on the visual heat-shimmer that rises off a dark beach, warping the string lights and distant figures behind it. Shoot through the wobble so the person only resolves as they step closer.
“Every move you make is pulling me in tight”
Handheld two-shot on a dance floor of sand: each time she turns away the camera drifts after her, physically unable to hold distance. Never let them fully separate in frame.
“Dancing on the line, baby, don't make me beg”
Literal image: bare feet at the wet-sand line where the tide draws its edge, toes right on it, one small step from the water. A tension gesture, not a caption.
“I can feel the spark, the fire in your eyes”
Extreme close-up: a campfire flame reflected as two tiny bright points in a dark iris. The only warm colour in an otherwise blue-black frame.
“Playing with temptation, let's see who'll be wise”
A staring game held a beat too long, both half-smiling, both refusing to look away first. Cut on the exact frame one of them loses.
“There's no need to speak, we already know”
Kill the dialogue entirely here: just an exchanged look across a campfire circle of other faces, the two of them reading each other over everyone's heads.
“Body to body, let's light the flame”
Match-cut a match being struck to light the beach fire against two silhouettes leaning in. Same flare, same instant of ignition.
“Every glance, every touch, we're teasing the edge”
A sequence of near-misses in slow motion: fingers almost brushing a wrist, a hand hovering at the small of a back, contact deferred each time. Withhold the actual touch.
“You're close enough to taste, and I like what I see”
Faces a breath apart, out of focus except lips and the sheen of sweat and salt on skin. Warm key light, everything else black.
“Our bodies talk, saying what we won't”
Shoot the hands and shoulders, never the mouths speaking. A shrug, a lean, a fingertip on a collarbone doing all the sentences the voices refuse.
“Fingers tracing lines we can't erase”
Close macro of a fingertip drawing a slow line down a forearm, leaving a faint pale drag through a film of sweat and sand that slowly fades. Time-lapse it fading to sell 'can't erase' against its own erasure.
“Whispers in the dark, we're playing the part”
Profiles almost touching, a whisper into an ear, lit only by the dying orange of the coals. Let the audio drop to just breath, no words.
“On this island, we're igniting hearts”
Pull the camera up and back to reveal the whole dark island shoreline, one small fire and two figures the only light on a long empty beach.
“The stars are watching, but they won't tell”
Slow tilt from the couple up to a full unpolluted Straddie sky. Hold on the stars as a silent, knowing witness: gentle magical realism, the sky as a face that keeps secrets.
“We're deep in this, under the island spell”
A soft unreal glow settles over the dune path behind them, the grass moving as if the whole island is leaning in. Enchantment, not effects: one degree off from real.
“In this heatwave, there's no need for names”
Final image at first light: the fire burned to grey ash, two sets of footprints leading off in different directions, no faces, no goodbye. End on the empty circle.

Lyrics

Verse 1
You’re like a heatwave, burning through the night,
Every move you make is pulling me in tight.
The way you look, it’s got me on the edge,
Dancing on the line, baby, don’t make me beg.
I can feel the spark, the fire in your eyes,
Playing with temptation, let’s see who’ll be wise.
Pre-Chorus
There’s no need to speak, we already know,
The way this is heading, we’re going with the flow.
Body to body, let’s light the flame,
In this heatwave, it’s all just a game.
Chorus
Heatwave, feel it rise,
The night’s too hot to disguise.
Every glance, every touch,
We’re teasing the edge, it’s almost too much.
Heatwave, hearts on fire,
We’re playing with that deep desire.
Let’s burn it up, lose control,
In this heatwave, let’s feed the soul.
Verse 2
You’re close enough to taste, and I like what I see,
The way you move’s like a sin set free.
Our bodies talk, saying what we won’t,
We could stop right now, but we both know we won’t.
The air’s electric, the moment’s right,
Let’s take our time and ride this night.
Pre-Chorus
No more waiting, no more games,
In this heatwave, we’ve got no shame.
Feel the fire burning slow,
Where it’ll take us, we already know.
Chorus
Heatwave, feel it rise,
The night’s too hot to disguise.
Every glance, every touch,
We’re teasing the edge, it’s almost too much.
Heatwave, hearts on fire,
We’re playing with that deep desire.
Let’s burn it up, lose control,
In this heatwave, let’s feed the soul.
Bridge
Fingers tracing lines we can’t erase,
In this heat, it’s no need for space.
Whispers in the dark, we’re playing the part,
On this island, we’re igniting hearts.
The stars are watching, but they won’t tell,
We’re deep in this, under the island spell.
Chorus
Heatwave, feel it rise,
The night’s too hot to disguise.
Every glance, every touch,
We’re teasing the edge, it’s almost too much.
Heatwave, hearts on fire,
We’re playing with that deep desire.
Let’s burn it up, lose control,
In this heatwave, let’s feed the soul.
Outro
We’re playing with fire, but it feels so right,
In this heatwave, we’ll burn all night.
No tomorrow, just tonight’s flame,
In this heatwave, there’s no need for names.
