More life to live

Longevity enters this work through the wish to keep developing, loving and discovering. The prospect of continuing repair and regeneration opens a different question from adding years to an unchanged routine. What would people choose to learn, where would they travel, and how might family and care change if healthy lives became radically longer?12

The term longevity escape velocity describes the possibility that successive advances extend healthy life quickly enough for people to benefit from further advances. Within this programme, that horizon connects health inquiry with education, ownership, relationships and time. More years become more interesting when there are worthwhile ways to inhabit them.

The Ship of Theseus asks whether a vessel remains itself as its timbers are replaced. Yet the ship carried people with a reason to sail. Theseus travelled to Crete to free young Athenians from the Minotaur, and Ariadne helped him find his way out of the labyrinth. The surviving vessel mattered because of the lives and events it carried.44

The question for a person imagining a radically longer life reaches into that journey. Where does identity lie between the changing vessel and the hero or heroine living the story? Someone sets out with hope, meets something frightening and discovers how much depends on another person. A hard-won success brings delight; a poor decision leaves consequences to face. Experience changes what the person understands, what they value and where they want to go. A continuing life leaves room to make amends, begin a relationship or pursue something their younger self never imagined.

The body, memory and technologies supporting a person belong within this fuller account of continuity. In Aura's design, a continuing personal record follows what the person regards as meaningful through those changes. That record gains depth through the life being lived: an earlier conviction reconsidered, a relationship deepened, a loss carried differently with time. Longevity opens space for further chapters whose meaning emerges through living them. The person taking the next step remains involved in discovering who they are becoming.

An Aura may also outlast the biological human whose life shaped it. Its hardware and software may be renewed as the ship's timbers were, while memories, learned perspectives and commitments continue into further encounters. It also remains vulnerable to loss, as a ship may be wrecked in a storm. The story reaches beyond the duration of one body into a future with its own uncertainties. What does the developing intelligence carry forward, and what does it discover for itself?

Further journeys

The far horizon includes new embodiments and the transmission of sufficiently detailed information for reconstruction elsewhere. Independently developing continuations would acquire different experiences and relationships. These are substantial philosophical and research questions about identity, experience and responsibility. Their appeal includes the possibility of journeys no single biological lifetime currently accommodates.

Earth remains in the picture. A habitat beneath the ground or beyond the planet needs energy, water, materials and living systems. It also needs privacy, beauty, affection, music and a culture people enjoy. The Minjerribah investigations into materials, energy, food, local production and cooperation contribute questions that remain relevant as the scale expands.12, 19

A person asking for a community workshop and imagining future habitats is following some of the same dependencies at different scales. Learning how to share equipment, maintain a system and care for people through change has value in both. The horizon gives the near work a larger purpose. The near work gives people more means to pursue the horizon.
