Lives worth living

Lives worth living

Joyful Responsible Abundance begins with affection, agency, time and the material conditions of a chosen life.

There is a simple reason that housing, care, work and intelligence keep meeting in this collection. People are trying to have lives.

They want a place to come home to, people pleased to see them, useful work, something to learn and enough energy left to enjoy it. Some want children. Some want travel or deep roots in one place. Some are beginning again after illness, a difficult relationship or years in a job they no longer want. A person might value exploration and need stability at the same time. That is a life to understand, rather than a contradiction to erase.

Joyful Responsible Abundance begins there. Joy includes affection, play, beauty, curiosity and the relief of having time. Responsibility follows the consequences of a choice into other lives and the places that sustain them. Abundance concerns the material and intellectual capacity through which more possibilities become available. The words keep one another honest. An impressive productive system still has a human problem if everyone inside it is exhausted. A careful institution still has a human problem if it offers little worth looking forward to.12, 24

Different languages and cultures bring more to those words than an English definition contains. That is part of the purpose of GAJRA Earth, the Global Association for Joyful Responsible Abundance on Earth proposed by Luke Nathan Hayes. The inquiry asks people to describe what matters in their setting and examine it through practical work. A community may share a commitment to care while differing about family, faith, ownership or public space. Useful intelligence includes that difference and the experience through which people negotiate it.24

The AI alignment question then becomes richer. Before asking an artificial intelligence to act in accordance with human values, people need ways to express more of what they mean by those values. A word such as freedom changes meaning when someone has no realistic way to leave a bad arrangement. Family changes meaning when housing and time make it difficult to have the family a person wants. Safety changes meaning when protection becomes a reason to remove every alternative.

Who gets the time back

The same question becomes very concrete in a workplace. Suppose better software removes hours of repetitive administration. The organisation has choices about the resulting capacity. It may serve more customers, improve quality, reduce prices, improve pay, shorten hours or retain more profit. Different combinations produce different lives for the people involved.

The ILO's 2025 assessment estimated that one in four workers worldwide were in occupations with some exposure to generative AI. It judged transformation more likely than complete replacement for most occupations because human input remains important across tasks. That finding makes the distribution question more immediate. Changed work still changes bargaining power, skill requirements and who receives the gain.39

Mutual Futures examines an opportunity at the point where existing business owners retire. A workshop or service business contains more than equipment and a balance sheet. It carries customers, practical judgement, trusted relationships and people who know how to make it function. Succession into worker, cooperative or other shared ownership offers a route through which technological upgrading also spreads productive ownership. The departing owner receives an agreed arrangement; the next stage preserves and develops the enterprise's accumulated capability.12, 24

A scheduling improvement that creates more room for care has a different effect from one that fills every remaining minute with another task. A member-owned business still needs competent management, reserves and money for equipment. Its members have a stronger position from which to decide what the productivity is for.

Intermittent Retirement extends that question across a lifetime. Freedom concentrated at the end of working life arrives too late for many of the things people once wanted to do. A period for recovery, parenting, travel or study may matter most decades earlier. Funding it involves real coverage, income and responsibilities. The aspiration gives those practical questions a purpose: a person's growing capability ought to open more of a life.

Try Everything Once makes a related invitation to people who have never had room to discover what suits them. Someone may find a vocation early and enjoy mastering it. Someone else may have entered the first available job and spent years without a supported way to try another. Short practical experiences, mentors and learning available when needed make changing direction less costly.

Ready Sustainable Employment and Training Cooperative, or Ready S.E.T. Co-op, is the proposed organisation connecting that learning with workplaces and useful paid roles. Its wider functions include recruitment, workforce administration, technical support, equipment and shared business services. The human story is a person receiving help with the next step, then becoming able to help someone else. The organisational story is the structure that makes that relationship dependable.13, 16

Universal Intelligence concerns access to useful intelligence and the ability to question the systems involved. Universal Adequate Income concerns having enough to sustain a life through changing circumstances. Adequacy depends on actual needs, including disability, care, housing and movement between work and learning. Wages, public services, social protection, shared ownership and productive assets have different contributions to make. The architecture keeps them in conversation because a gap in one is lived by the person crossing it.

Love belongs in the picture

The personal writing is frank about affection, intimacy, family and the desire to share a life. Those interests are part of what Joyful Responsible Abundance is for. A discussion of technological progress that leaves out love has left out a great deal of the reason people wanted progress in the first place.

UNFPA's 2025 report surveyed people across fourteen countries about the families they wanted. Thirty-nine per cent reported financial limitations that had affected or would affect their desired family size. The finding describes those surveyed countries. Its broader question is agency: people having the information, relationships and material conditions to choose more children, fewer children or none.40

Global Group Marriages explores larger networks of adult relationships, parenting, care and shared resources. One person wants children and a creative career. Another wants family and enjoys practical care. Someone else welcomes shared living while having a different romantic life. Their agreements develop from actual preferences rather than a single label.12

The relationship constellation keeps different commitments understandable. Friendship, sexuality, co-parenting, housing and business cooperation need not connect every person in the same way. Private space matters. So do domestic work, money, illness, parenting and the ability to leave safely. Cross-border relationships add residence and legal responsibilities. A larger family becomes worthwhile through the quality of those relationships and the arrangements that sustain them.

Public scrutiny may arrive at these ideas through an excited interpretation or a hostile one. The substantive discussion starts with the people and choices involved. Fiction, private aspirations and a public proposal each have their own place. Equal standing in civic life accommodates a wide range of voluntarily chosen lives. The care of children and the obligations adults undertake receive direct attention within those choices.

The creative worlds carry another part of the invitation. Tiggy Bestmann's curiosity and Australian Sire's more selective romantic interests give different characters room to explore an expanding world. Songs and stories express desires that a short profile would struggle to contain. They also make it possible for compatible readers and collaborators to recognise something they would enjoy exploring together.3, 12

For Hayes, those motives are personal as well as philosophical. A livelihood, a home, travel, music, speaking, relationships and useful collaboration belong in the future he is trying to make room for. A network becomes more interesting when its participants also find room for their own lives within it.
