The waffle catalogue
Every one of these has been said in place of an argument. A bad argument for a true conclusion is still a bad argument, so where a real objection hides inside one, the better version is marked.

The Sun cannot go nova, it has no binary companion.
- The problem
- It answers a claim nobody made. A classical nova needs a dead star stealing hydrogen from a neighbour. The proposed event is not that.
- The version that works
- The proposed solar mechanism has no worked model, and borrowing the white dwarf's name does not import the white dwarf's physics.

Micronova is a made-up word.
- The problem
- False. Nature, April 2022, and standard vocabulary in astronomy since.
- The version that works
- The 2022 micronova is a different object, so the word's adoption is not evidence for the solar claim. The word, and what it names.

Ben Davidson is a lawyer, not a scientist.
- The problem
- An attack on a person, and a tell: it turns up doing the work a citation should be doing. The history of the field is full of amateurs who were right.
- The version that works
- Name the claim that is wrong, and show why.

It's pseudoscience.
- The problem
- A verdict standing in for an argument. The word describes a method, so it has to be earned by showing the method failing.
- The version that works
- Part of that case can be made here: the forecast window has moved more than once, and a forecast that survives every observation by widening has stopped doing work.

There is no evidence.
- The problem
- False. Miyake events, superflare statistics, Laschamps, the measured field decay, the growing South Atlantic anomaly. The settled floor is set out in one table.
- The version that works
- What is usually meant is "there is no evidence for the mechanism", which is defensible and is a different sentence. Say the sentence you mean.

There's no 12,000-year cycle in the record.
- The problem
- Nearly right. "No cycle has been demonstrated" and "the record shows there is no cycle" are different claims, and only the first is supportable.
- The version that works
- Check the ladder rung by rung and say what you find. Two accepted, three proposed and never confirmed, two with nothing behind them.

That's just the Younger Dryas impact hypothesis, which was debunked.
- The problem
- Two errors. They are separate claims and the micronova argument does not depend on an impact, and "debunked" overstates a live dispute.
- The version that works
- The direction of travel runs against it, so leaning on it as corroboration now costs more than it pays. The dating and the retractions.

Scientists would have noticed.
- The problem
- Assumes the conclusion. Miyake events sat in tree rings until 2012. Superflare frequency on stars like ours was underestimated by one to two orders of magnitude until 2024.
- The version that works
- Noticing is a process with a rate, and here the rate has been slow and the corrections have gone one way.

The field has been weakening for ages, it's normal.
- The problem
- True and incomplete: the field has been through many such episodes. The measured rates.
- The version that works
- Normal is not the same as harmless. What is new is the exposure: an ordinary storm against a weaker field, hitting a grid full of long conductors and large transformers.

A pole reversal takes thousands of years, nothing to worry about.
- The problem
- Confuses a reversal with an excursion. Excursions are faster and come back to the same polarity, and the literature on how fast a field can change has been revised towards faster.
- The version that works
- The flip is not the point. The low point on the way is.

Correlation is not causation.
- The problem
- True, and usually deployed to end a conversation rather than advance one. The argument here is a coincidence-counting argument, so this objection has to do real work.
- The version that works
- The events were dated and selected by people who already knew what the pattern was meant to be, so the pattern may live in the selection. Close to decisive.

Peer review would have caught it.
- The problem
- False here. Solar effects on climate oscillations and on earthquake timing, and cosmic-ray effects on cloud and volcanic processes, all have peer-reviewed literature.
- The version that works
- The dispute is over weight and interpretation, not over whether anything is published. Argue the weight.

This is doomsday prepper stuff.
- The problem
- Guilt by association. The physics claim and the preparation come apart cleanly, and the preparation is justified on mainstream hazard rates alone.
- The version that works
- The preparation gets dismissed by attacking the physics, and the physics by attacking the preparation. Neither is an argument about either.

It's a YouTube channel.
- The problem
- Not an argument. Where material is published is not a property of whether it is right.
- The version that works
- The books cite real papers with reference numbers. Some support what they are said to support and some carry more weight than the paper claims, and only reading them tells you which.
The shape underneath
Ten of fourteen do the same thing.
They attack the wrapper and report it as a refutation of the contents. The catastrophe mythology, the cover-up chapter, the prepping advice, the channel, the author's degree.
Binning a parcel because you recognise the wrapping is fast, and in the wild it is usually right. Which is exactly why it is dangerous here, where the parcel contains claims that can be checked.
The other four are real objections in bad clothes. Dressed properly they sit with the claim itself, and two of them are close to decisive.
