Almost nothing in this argument is hidden. The Sun is photographed continuously, the solar wind is measured on the way in, the magnetic field is mapped by satellite, and the pole position is published by two governments. This page is the link list: when a claim gets made in either direction, this is where to check it rather than reading someone's summary of it.

Space weather, live
NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center. Solar wind speed and density, geomagnetic storm levels, flare alerts. The official warning service, updated by the minute.

The Sun, continuously
NASA Solar Dynamics Observatory. Full-disc images across many wavelengths. If the outer structure of the Sun ever changed, this is where it would show first.

The field and the poles
NOAA geomagnetism and the World Magnetic Model. Pole positions, field models, and the annual reports that record how fast things are moving.

The field from orbit
ESA Swarm. Three satellites mapping the magnetic field since 2013. The source of most of what is known about the South Atlantic anomaly.

The cosmic ray count
The worldwide neutron monitor network. Ground stations counting the particles that make it down through the atmosphere, posting numbers as they come, so the flux is measured rather than inferred from sunspot number.

The tree-ring record
IntCal radiocarbon calibration curves. The dataset the Miyake events were found in, and the one a new event would be found in.

The star archives
MAST, holding the Kepler and TESS data. The superflare survey and the 2022 micronova both came out of these archives, and they are open.
One line in that stack has nothing behind it
A coronagraph blocks the bright disc so the faint outer atmosphere, and anything leaving it, becomes visible. Nearly every plasma-cloud forecast on Earth still starts from LASCO, aboard a spacecraft launched in 1995 and running decades past its design life. SOLAR-1 reached L1 in January 2026 and was commissioned mid-year, which puts a second coronagraph there for the first time. Vigil, which would watch side-on from 60 degrees behind Earth, is planned for 2031.
