The stories that lasted
Geomythology is the study of accounts handed down by word of mouth that turn out to describe real geological events. It was named by a geologist in 1968 and it is ordinary academic work. Take the story, take the geology, and see whether they line up in place, in kind, and in time.

Twenty-one Aboriginal accounts, from twenty-one locations around the whole Australian coastline, describe a time when the sea came in and took country that had been dry. Nineteen came from written collections made over the last two centuries; two from speaking with people directly.
The dating is done by depth. For each site, the minimum amount of water that would have to be removed for the account to be literally true was worked out, then read off the post-glacial sea-level curve as the most recent moment the coast could have looked that way. Published in the Australian Geographer in 2016 by a marine geographer and a linguist working together.
Which is what separates it from a wave
A tsunami arrives and leaves. It does not lower the sea afterwards. These accounts describe country now under a set depth of water that was once walked on: a permanent change in where the coast sits. The second leg is geographic, the same element at sites right around the continent, which is harder to put down to independent invention than to a lot of people watching one slow process.
Country that was walked on is under water now, and the account of it going under was kept, accurately, for seven thousand years.
Said carefully
These are living traditions belonging to specific peoples. Citing them in someone else's argument is not the same as having standing in them, and no cultural authority is claimed here. That holds for every tradition on this page.
Two
Two more, checked from outside.
Mount Mazama, in what is now Oregon, collapsed about 7,700 years ago and left the hole that became Crater Lake. The Klamath account has rocks the size of hills thrown through the air, fire over the forests, and the hollow filling with rain. Human sandals have been found under the Mazama ash.
- Japan, written. On the night of 26 January 1700 a tsunami came ashore with no earthquake felt beforehand, recorded in local documents. The orphan tsunami: a wave with no parent.
- The Pacific Northwest, spoken. Accounts along that coast describe floods, shaking, and a fight between Thunderbird and Whale, on a winter night.
- The ground, physical. Drowned stands of trees where the coast dropped, and sand thrown inland by a wave.
One rupture along the Cascadia subduction zone, between magnitude 8.7 and 9.2, on the evening of 26 January 1700. Two of those records were made by people who did not know the other coast existed, and one was carried by mouth for three hundred years.
What people carved has been read the same way: eighty-four forms made by high-current laboratory discharges, matched against Neolithic rock art in the IEEE Transactions on Plasma Science in 2003 and 2007, peer-reviewed by one of the three fields the claim spans. Why the surviving record is nearly all endings.
Keeping an account alive by mouth costs time, ceremony, and people willing to be held to it. What earns that cost is information that keeps people alive: what the sky did first, which ground held.
A tradition that told you to run for the ridge was retold by the people who ran for the ridge, so the surviving corpus is not a random sample of what people once said; it is the subset that was load-bearing. And the same argument cuts the other way
Selection also explains universality with no global event behind it, because every people lives near water. Which is why specific beats universal: twenty-one dated coastlines outweigh a thousand cultures with a flood story.

Where the fight happens, and where the case is
Almost every public argument over this material happens at the third tier, where nobody can win. The case is made at the first. A second-tier tradition is then a signal with an unidentified source, and the response is to go looking for the source rather than to rule on the story.
And the limit on all of it
Demonstrated: accounts handed down by mouth can carry accurate, dateable information across thousands of years, given a culture built to keep them. Not demonstrated: that any particular story is a record. Treating every old story as data is the mirror of dismissing every one.
