Down at the small end of the dig, the same sand could become the everyday bits of a house: tiles, pavers, a bench, a privacy screen. All made here on the island, and easy to mend when they chip or crack.
The small end
None of this is made yet. The idea is that a household could press its own tiles and pavers from island sand, at a backyard scale, and fix them itself when they crack. You can count the sand a tunnel gives and see how little a home job really needs.
Six things for the house
Some borrow from things you already see in a bathroom or a backyard; some are still just a drawing. Each one is a could, a would, a maybe one day. The bigger the job, the more of the dig it takes.
A little tray of test tiles to dial in the mix, the finish and the colour before anything bigger. The kind of batch you could fire over a weekend and hold up to the light.
Wall and floor tiles for a bathroom or laundry, splashbacks over the sink, and the neat edges around a drain. Enough to do one wet room, from the island's own sand.
Bench slabs for the kitchen, a few shelves and window sills, and some pavers for the garden path. The solid, everyday surfaces a house leans on.
Privacy blocks and breeze blocks that let the air and light through but keep the neighbours' gaze out, plus the trims that finish an edge. A screen for the front porch or the side fence.
The wet-area pieces, porch pavers, shade feet and bits of storage that turn a bare shell into somewhere you can live. A whole small home's worth of finishing, cast at home.
A shared shed of tiles, pavers, counters and repair kits that residents could borrow, request or copy for their own place. One street's worth of spares, kept for the whole street, for the neighbourhood's own use rather than for sale.
Before any of it
None of this is made yet, and it is for the island's own homes, not for export or profit. Sand for a home job would come from a dig on the land, so the fresh water stays safe and the Quandamooka people, through QYAC, have their say. Start small, keep it local, and fix what you make.
