The threats, all of them

Most places prepare for one disaster at a time and argue about the rest. Here we do something different: name every threat honestly, from the bushfire that will certainly come back to the rock from the sky that almost certainly won't come soon, and shows the punchline underneath them all. The same handful of preparations serves every single one. You never have to win an argument about the scary ones to justify the work, because the cyclone you'll definitely meet already justifies it.

Bushfire

An island of eucalypt and heath in a drying climate. Fire is not an if.

East-coast tsunami

Rare on this coast, but the continental slope offshore has slumped before, and the ocean remembers how.

Nuclear war

    KnownStraight odds: rises and falls with politics, not geology, which means it can also be lowered on purpose. Hardening: distance from likely targets is the island's quiet advantage, then the same five preparations with fallout-aware sheltering and stored clean water. The people matter most: communities that hold together, recover. This ladder is peace-first by design: it builds shelters, never sides.

AI takeover and robot conflict

The people building the smartest systems on Earth disagree, in public, about whether those systems could slip everyone's control. That open disagreement is itself the warning label, and honesty is the only credible position available.

  • The record no precedent yet, which is exactly the point; expert forecasts run from "manageable" to "existential"
    Disputed SpeculativeHardening: happens to be precisely the island's digital architecture: sovereign, local-first, offline-capable systems with humans holding the keys; models you can run, read and switch off; no single dependence on a distant cloud. A community that owns its tools cannot be held hostage by them. And the drawing-board rule applies to machines too: nothing that can injure a living creature.

Geomagnetic excursion

Every so often, Earth's magnetic shield sags and wanders for centuries at a time. It has happened again and again, and the field is measurably weakening right now.

  • The record the Laschamps excursion is solid science, and published research has argued it coincided with megafauna extinctions and the fading of the Neanderthals; it is one of a whole run of named excursions, and how close together they come is the live argument
    Known DisputedExcursions sometimes keep company with extinction events; whether that's coincidence or mechanism is the frontier fight, and the comfortable answer doesn't get picked here by default. In the deeper model, a sagging field also unlocks the crust, which is where this card joins hands with the mega-tsunami one. Straight odds: this is a repeating event, not a one-off, and the spacing between them is what the frontier argues about. What nobody argues: the field has shed roughly a tenth of its strength in about 150 years, and the weak patch over the South Atlantic keeps growing. Hardening: the beauty of this one is that it needs nothing new; it is the Carrington kit held for longer, plus shelter and stored capability. That's the threat-agnostic thesis proving itself.

Mega-tsunami

Not a theory. In 1958 a landslide in Lituya Bay, Alaska drove water 524 metres up the opposite shore, and fishermen anchored in the bay rode the wave and lived to describe it.

    Known DisputedAnd it has more than one trigger: great submarine landslides, sub-ocean supervolcanoes (new ones are still being discovered on the seafloor), asteroid strikes into open ocean, and, in the frontier model, the crustal shifts of a geomagnetic excursion setting the great waves loose. Straight odds: the phenomenon is proven; the timing is the honest unknown, and it may never be predictable, but early warning is a live engineering question, not a fantasy: slope monitoring, seafloor sensors and deep-ocean buoys already watch for the ordinary kind, and the island's hydrophone ambitions point the same way. Hardening: elevation first, then the subterranean thesis in full: a sealed refuge inside a 200-metre dune does not care how big the wave was once it has passed. This threat is half the reason the tunnels work points where it points.

Supervolcano

deep time · proven, monitored

Every few tens of thousands of years, somewhere on Earth, an eruption a hundred times anything in living memory dims the sky for years.

  • The record Toba, about 74,000 years ago, left ash across half of Asia; the one under strain right now is Campi Flegrei, the restless caldera beneath the suburbs of Naples with half a million people living inside it
    KnownYellowstone and Taupo get the documentaries; Campi Flegrei gets the seismographs, swarming with quakes and slowly lifting the ground it holds. And the seafloor keeps surprising us: newly discovered submarine supervolcanoes tie this card straight to the mega-tsunami one. Straight odds: deep-time rare globally, but "which one and when" is a live question, not a comfortable one. The danger for this island isn't the blast; it's years of dimmed sun and failed harvests worldwide. Hardening: stored food, protected growing, and energy that doesn't need clear skies: banked heat in the sand and the swell both keep working under an ash-dimmed sky, which is a quiet argument for the whole energy mix.

Snowball Earth

The rock record says this planet has iced over nearly pole to pole before. Slowly, but all the way.

  • The record the Cryogenian glaciations, around 700 million years ago, are mainstream geology; what starts and ends them is still argued
    Known DisputedStraight odds: the deepest deep time on this page; nothing on a human calendar. It earns its card because it's the purest test of the thesis: a civilisation that can live warm under the sand on banked energy while the surface freezes has already answered every smaller cold snap for free.

Asteroid or comet

deep time · the rock from the sky

The one everybody jokes about, until you remember the rock that ended the dinosaurs actually landed.

  • The record Tunguska 1908 flattened a forest; Chelyabinsk 2013 arrived unannounced; DART 2022 proved deflection is real engineering
    KnownStraight odds: city-killers are deep-time rare, and detection improves yearly. Hardening: deflection belongs to the world; the island's share is the universal kit: shelter, stores, energy, knowledge, and the capability to rebuild, which is the Kardashev conversation in disguise. Grey goo

deep time · the runaway machine

Self-replicating machines small enough to eat the world and dumb enough to do it: the nightmare coined at the birth of nanotechnology.

  • The record a thought experiment taken seriously enough that physicists have formally bounded it; nothing like it exists yet
    SpeculativeStraight odds: far off; out-replicating biology is monstrously hard, and bacteria have had four billion years of practice. Hardening: the honest card on the page: shelter helps least here and prevention is everything. Open, inspectable fabrication, the maker-space ethic scaled up, beats secret laboratories, which makes the bench part of the answer.

Non-human intelligence and contact

this century · disclosure is underway

This stopped being a fringe topic in front of the world's cameras. The United States Congress has held UAP disclosure hearings, officers have testified under oath about non-human intelligence programs, and the government's own investigation office logs cases it cannot explain. Leaving this card off would be dodging the truth, so it stays.

Straight odds: genuinely unknowable, which cuts both ways and always has. Hardening: watch honestly with open instruments (the island's sensor mesh and hydrophones count), keep systems that work without anyone's permission, and stay humble. The story world kept a chair at this table long before Congress pulled one up.

The solar micro-nova

deep time · the frontier's biggest warning

Could the sun itself periodically erupt: smaller than a supernova, vastly bigger than any flare on record, enough to scorch a hemisphere, collapse the field and set the oceans loose? Of everything on this page, this may be the threat that deserves to rank first, and it is taken that seriously here. It is also not one claim but five, carrying very different weights, so they are laid out one at a time. Most arguments about this get fought entirely on the last one and treat losing there as losing the lot.

  • Do the magnetic shifts happen? yes, over and over, written into lava and sediment on every continent
    KnownThe one around 41,000 years ago is the best studied of them. It is one of a run, not a single ancient oddity.
  • Can the sun do things far past our records? yes: tree rings hold single-year particle storms way beyond anything measured since instruments existed, and a 2024 survey found stars like ours let off superflares roughly once a century
    KnownThat is ten to a hundred times more often than astronomers had it before the survey. The quiet sun of our lifetimes is not the sun's ordinary behaviour.
  • Does the sun's neighbourhood change, and our place in it? yes, and both halves. A dense cloud squeezed the sun's protective bubble down inside Earth's orbit about two million years ago, and passing stars reshape the planets' own paths
    KnownBoth published in 2024. The old working assumption that our corner of space sits still has been retired, and it was holding a lot of weight.
  • Could a change like that set a star like ours shedding a layer? nobody has shown it: no model, no measurement, no observed case
    SpeculativeThe proposed engine in plain words: the galaxy has weather too, and charged, dusty waves sweep across it the way gusts cross a paddock, changing the electrical surroundings of every star they pass. Stars build energy in response, and let it go. That is the picture, and this is the genuinely open step where the whole thing lives or dies.
  • Does it run on a tidy 6,000 or 12,000-year clock? asserted rather than established, and the frontier's own books carry three different cycle lengths
    DisputedThe weakest of the five. Worth seeing clearly: the clock and the eruption are separate claims. If the clock is wrong, the step above is untouched, because any large enough change in the surroundings would do it, cycle or no cycle.
  • What it means here the preparation does not wait on the argument
    Early warning means watching the sun with open models that improve every year.     FictionalThe mega-wave film, the century of aurora, the frozen surface with warm rooms beneath it: each one doubles as a drill, a recruitment poster and a record of what this community chose to take seriously. The film festival and the documentary builders are the production line.

How to read this page

  • Each threat is labelled honestly: Known phenomena carry receipts; Disputed and Speculative say exactly what is argued and where the frontier sits. No natural hazard here is ever called fiction; the Fictional chip belongs to the films alone.
  • Likelihoods are plain-spoken bands, not false precision. "This decade" means expect it; "this century" means plan for it; "deep time" means build a civilisation that outlasts the question.
  • Deep pages per threat will come as the site grows; this is the honest index of all of them.
  • Warning comes before hardening. The watchtower is the honest state of the art on what can actually be seen coming, and how far ahead.

Strip the costume off every card above and the same face looks back: disorder. Life in this universe is a constant ebb and flow of expansion and contraction, reproduction and consumption, and we have tamed one thin, precious slice of it. The deal has no pause button. The moment a civilisation stops organising, entropy resumes consuming its systems, its knowledge and its people, no cataclysm required: rust, rot, forgetting and drift do it for free.

That is not doom talk; it is the job description. Every part of this ladder, the trust, the bench, the tunnels, the alchemy that refuses to waste a single grain, is organisation practised on purpose, joyfully, one generation handing the work to the next. Joyful responsible abundance is what winning slowly looks like.
