Second Skin Space Suits
Design spacewear around the movement, fit and dignity of many different bodies.
Follow the connections. Choose your direction.
The need worth working on.
A 'second skin' space suit is a demanding engineering ambition. The practical starting point is understanding how garments and equipment interact with real people: different heights, bust sizes, body mass, mobility, reach and ways of dressing. A suit concept cannot assume every wearer shares a single athletic shape.
What the enterprise could offer.
Build an inclusive fit and movement research studio for future spacewear. Start with non-pressurised mock-ups, not protective equipment. Explore fastening, adjustment, layering and the ability to complete tasks independently, then hand a traceable requirements brief to experienced suit engineers.
People to build with
- Human-factors researchers and specialist garment designers
- Space training teams exploring task ergonomics
- Women whose bodies are poorly represented in conventional equipment sizing
A movement and fit workshop
Let participants choose practical tasks and describe existing equipment frustrations.
Make adjustable non-protective mock-ups and test reach, dressing and comfort.
Record participant feedback without publishing personal measurements.
Ask a qualified human-factors specialist to translate findings into design requirements.
The first result
A participant-reviewed fit brief and non-protective garment demonstrator.
What needs to be demonstrated.
Engineering development
The starting evidence
Human-factors and garment studies can inform a future suit; the pilot would not establish pressure protection or flight readiness.
The open question
No material, pressure system, thermal design or qualified engineering partner is specified in the original concept.
The next measurement
Compare task completion and wearer-reported fit across the agreed mock-up variations.
Build the means to deliver.
Useful capabilities and resources
- A garment designer and human-factors lead
- Paid participant involvement and accessible workshop space
- A specialist space engineering reviewer
A possible business model
Contract fit research and development services could precede any specialised garment product.
A leadership decision to practise
Give wearers authority over what comfort and independence mean. Ensure larger and large-busted women influence the initial design, rather than being added as an afterthought.
People, consequences and decisions.
- A comfortable mock-up may not work as a pressure garment.
- Personal body measurements need careful participant control.
- A glamorous illustration can conceal unresolved fit and engineering questions.
If equality were being designed now...
- Would a large-busted, fat or differently mobile woman have equal influence over the suit design?
- Can wearers choose privacy around body measurements and fitting?
Begin with women's own experiences across bodies, ages, cultures and places. Invite disagreement and choose a practical change together.

Build alongside these ideas.
Make radiation protection decisions traceable to an exposure scenario and evidence.
Research frontier
Investigate long-duration life support by measuring the limits of one resource loop.
Research frontier
Design near-eye displays around visual comfort, body fit and a clear task.
Engineering development
Design intimate apparel around women's own definitions of comfort, support, beauty and identity.
Practical pilot
Follow existing public concept work.
Explore possible futures for relationships, living systems, intelligence, movement, science and culture.
Explore elements, crystals, metamaterials and frontier ideas through quantities, mechanisms and the nearest working technology.
From the original suggestion to a working brief.
Developed from original enterprise 71 in the 500 Queens VC NEW Long presentation (slide 17) and the planning document (page 8). This expanded brief is a proposed development path, not evidence of an operating venture or a confirmed partner.
Original title: Second Skin Space Suits. The pilot, business model and learning connections on this page are proposed developments of that original idea.
