Plain-English bridge

Arm
An instruction-set and processor-design family widely used in phones, embedded systems and efficient servers. Arm licenses designs; it does not manufacture the finished chip.
FPGA
Reconfigurable logic: a chip whose hardware arrangement changes after manufacture. It tests ideas, evolves indefinitely or remains the chosen deployed architecture in its own right.
ASIC
An application-specific integrated circuit: custom silicon built for a defined job, rather than a general-purpose processor.
SoC
A system-on-chip: CPU, memory interfaces, accelerators, security and other functions combined in one package or die.
Tape-out
The point where one chosen version of a chip layout is released for mask preparation and fabrication. Errors after this handoff make a respin expensive.
PDK + EDA
A process design kit contains foundry rules and models. Electronic design automation tools turn and check a design against those rules.
DTN
Delay-tolerant networking stores data until a link becomes available. This is essential when connections are intermittent or separated by space-time delay.
CDU
A coolant distribution unit moves and controls liquid between hot computing equipment and the system that rejects or reuses the heat.
