MANDATORY DESIGN GATE / ACCESS AND EMERGENCY EGRESS
Entry and exit shape the chamber.
Every bought, retrofitted or newly built chamber must conform to its applicable emergency-egress requirements. Entry geometry and assisted extraction are part of the core design from the first layout.
A release requirement across all four pathways.
A chamber is not ready for participant use until its actual entry, closure, emergency procedures and assisted egress have been demonstrated against the applicable standards, manufacturer instructions and installation requirements.
Identify the applicable requirements.
The project compliance register is to name the jurisdiction, intended use, chamber classification, standards and editions, relevant clauses, evidence and responsible reviewer. AS/NZS 4774.2:2019 addresses hyperbaric oxygen facilities; ASME PVHO-1 addresses pressure vessels for human occupancy. NFPA 99 is a further hyperbaric-facility code reference. The compliance register must identify the requirements and editions applicable to the actual design and site.
The person defines the access envelope.
The design review includes the intended participant’s body size, mobility, transfer support and foreseeable loss of ability to self-exit. A dimensioned full-size mock-up demonstrates door opening, threshold, seat adjustment, helper reach and the extraction route using the intended equipment.
- No crystal lining, seam, display or compute tile obstructs the required clear opening.
- No sensor lead, mask hose, clothing attachment or headset traps the participant.
- Door travel and external equipment preserve the required assisted-transfer area.
- The room route continues to the receiving care area and the building’s required exit arrangements.
Emergency egress is a complete sequence.
The responsible hyperbaric team defines the pressure-management, door-release, communication and assisted-extraction procedure for the selected chamber. Fault scenarios include loss of power, communication or relevant controls and an occupant unable to move independently. The acceptance test uses that reviewed sequence.
Evidence before procurement or integration.
A supplier review requires model-specific drawings, instructions, emergency-system descriptions, conformity documentation and evidence relevant to the intended use. Site acceptance records the actual fitted equipment and rehearsed extraction. Delivery access widths describe getting equipment into a building; they do not establish emergency-egress clearances for a person.
Entry geometry and verification.
The compact seated enclosure requires a large front opening and clear surrounding access. Dimensioned designs, verified door operation and signed emergency-egress acceptance are required before participant use.
