The wasteful age, and the one after it
A kinder, more useful story about rubbish. Some of this age's waste was the price of learning fast, and it bought something real: we now know how to make almost anything. Some was plain greed. Most was nobody bothering to think. The fee's been paid, unevenly, and the one thing worth keeping is now free and in your pocket: all the world's know-how, ready to point at whatever's beneath your feet.
Be honest about the pile
Three kinds of waste, one heap.
The stuff at the tip looks like one problem. It's really three, and only one of them was ever worth paying for.
Tuition
- A solar panel costs a tenth of what it did in 2010, paid for with a mountain of early duds.
- That waste taught us something. Keep it. It's how anything gets good.
Greed
- 1924: the big bulb makers met and agreed, in writing, to make bulbs die sooner.
- "Built to break", on purpose. Rare, though, because it takes a conspiracy.
Stupidity
- No plan, no villain. A bin closer than the shed. Two dollars cheaper because nobody counted.
- This is most of the heap. Not evil, not innocent: just nobody thinking.
And "worth it" has to say worth it for whom. On this island the sand was mined for eighty years: the ore left, the holes stayed. Whatever the age bought, this Country paid a share it never chose. So the honest claim is small: the fee is paid, mostly by people who didn't volunteer, and refusing to use what it bought refunds nobody.
The split that decides everything
An inheritance and a bill, same envelope.
The age left two kinds of leftovers, and they could not be more different. Treat them as one thing and you either despair or kid yourself.
Concentrated: the inheritance
A fridge, a car, a coil of copper, a tip full of appliances: refined metal, in one place, delivered by truck. The richest, gentlest ore body the island will ever get. The tip loop is how you collect it.
Dispersed: the bill
Microplastic in the sand, carbon in the air, chemicals in the water. You can't mine a mist. Scatter a material thin enough and gathering it back costs more than it's worth. That half is a debt, not a resource.
This island has a buried inheritance of its own. The monazite in these dunes wasn't worth digging in the 1990s, so the rules had it put back in the ground and covered to a set depth, on purpose, for safety. Not scattered to the wind. Still down there, still concentrated, still winnable, waiting for the century to decide it's worth something. With thorium, it now might be.
What ends it
Not guilt. A fence that fell down.
Mass production made things cheap by making them generic. But the factory's real advantage was never just its size. It was knowing how: the metallurgy, the chemistry, the process. You didn't know, and you couldn't find out. That fence was centuries tall.
It's gone. Every material and method humanity ever worked out is in your pocket now, free, and it answers your actual question instead of sitting on a shelf. So the choice flips: why ship a generic thing across an ocean when you know exactly how to make the right thing out of what's already under your feet? Know-how is universal now. Material never will be. They meet at the bench, and that meeting is what long-term civilisation planning actually runs on.
Which is when "built to break" stops being a business model and becomes a bug, because a thing made for you, out of here, that you can fix and change, is simply worth more than a new generic one off a boat.
Honest catch: the gap now isn't knowledge. It's hands and will. Knowing how a thing is made has never once made it, which is exactly what the bench and the drawing board are for.

Every part is age two, early.
Read the ladder with this in hand and it stops being a list of projects. It's one argument, told in metal, money and time.
The tip loop is a harvest
- Not penance. Collecting what the age concentrated and left.
The bench is the engine
- Where free know-how meets the specific stuff under your feet.
Patient capital is the funder
- Money that must double in five years always picks the thing that breaks in four.
Alchemy is the chemistry
- An age of lasting things needs a chemistry with no bin in it.
The tunnels are the long bet
- Nobody digs a room in sand for a five-year payback.

The fee's paid. The know-how's free. The pile's in the yard. From here it's just deciding whether we graduate or repeat the year, and joyful responsible abundance is simply what graduating looks like: enough, made well, made yours, made to last, and nothing thrown away that another process wanted.
