Rutile and ilmenite: the titanium sands

See the dark streaks running through the dunes? That's titanium ore, and some of the best in the world. Titanium is the metal that's as strong as steel, half the weight, and never rusts in the sea. The same dark sand also makes the white in nearly every tin of white paint.

Two grains, one metal

One is nearly pure. The other brings iron along.

There are two dark grains here. Rutile is the cleaner, richer one. Ilmenite is more common and carries iron as well, so you get two metals out of the one grain. Both were mined from these dunes for decades. Think of titanium as the metal you'd choose for anything that has to be light, strong, and left sitting in salt water for a lifetime: boat fittings, pumps, even the pins in someone's mended hip.

The paint and the colour are the easy, sensible ones. The metal is the special one, and the hardest. The little tags say how close the island could get.

Cleaned up, this sand becomes the brightest, safest white there is. It's the white in your paint, your paper, and the zinc on a lifesaver's nose. This is the single biggest thing the world uses these sands for.

This is the titanium you already know: the light, strong, never-rusts metal in dear bike frames, good sunglasses, camping gear and the pins in a mended hip. The island has the makings of it right there in the sand. Actually turning it into metal is the hard, power-hungry step, and the reason it's the pricey choice. The next section is why.

Because ilmenite carries iron alongside the titanium, you get iron out as well. One grain, two useful metals. That's the whole "waste nothing" idea in a nutshell.

Making the white paint leaves a rusty leftover behind. That leftover is the start of red and yellow ochre paint colour, the same earthy colours people have painted with forever. The waste from one job becomes the paint for the next.

The snag

The paint is easy. The metal is hungry.

So nobody gets carried away: the bright white paint and the earthy colours are the easy, proven part. The metal is the special one, and here's the plain reason why.

Think about what you already know. A titanium bike frame or pair of glasses costs several times a steel one. That gap isn't because titanium is rare, the island is covered in it. It's because turning sand into titanium metal takes far more electricity than steel does, and that power is what you're really paying for.

How much power? Roughly what your fridge uses in a few months, for enough metal to build one bike frame. Not a scary amount on its own, just a lot more than steel. Which makes it exactly the sort of thing an island rich in sun and wind could one day make, once the clean power is flowing.
