Pick up a handful of white Straddie sand. You're holding the same stuff as your kitchen window, your phone screen and the solar panels on someone's roof. It's the plainest thing on the beach and quietly one of the most useful. Here's what it could turn into one day.
The plain stuff
Most of the island, by weight, is this one pale sand. What makes ours special is how clean it is: barely anything mixed in. That's the whole trick. The cleaner the sand, the less work it takes to turn it into something worth having, which is exactly why it was worth mining here for so long.
What it could turn into
Every one of these is something the world already makes from sand, somewhere. Some would be easy for the island; some are a long climb.
Heat clean sand to around 1,500 degrees, until it runs like honey, then let it cool: you've got glass. Bottles, windows, the sheet a screen starts as. People have done it for thousands of years. All it really takes is a furnace that gets properly hot.
The shiny heart of a solar panel, and the chip in your phone, both begin as this sand. The catch is the road there: it takes big, power-hungry factories to clean the sand right down and shape it. Solar is a stretch but real. A chip factory is a different planet, billions of dollars and years of work, so that end stays a dream for now.
The soft rubbery stuff in your bakeware, your bathroom sealant, a pair of swimming goggles. Hard to believe, but it starts as sand too.
Here's a lovely one. Pour sand into a big insulated tank and heat it with spare power on a sunny, windy day. Depending on the design that runs anywhere from around 500 degrees, hotter than any kitchen oven, up to 1,000 degrees or more, glowing like a blacksmith's forge. The hotter it runs, the more it holds, and it keeps that warmth for weeks. Pull the heat back out for hot water, drying or industry whenever you need it. There's a real one already running in Finland.

The rest of the sand, one at a time: zircon, the toughest grain; rutile and ilmenite, the titanium sands; and monazite, the grain that carries a fuel. Or start at the bench and learn to spot them yourself with a magnet and a hand lens.
